⚠️ Clinical Contraindications

  • Osteoporosis / Osteopenia: Avoid loaded rotation; substitute with a neutral press-out only.
  • Acute Lumbar Disc Herniation: Avoid rotation under load; keep the trunk neutral and press the carriage in a straight line.

Setup Instructions

Stand on the carriage facing the footbar, hands on the footbar, pelvis neutral and legs long with the carriage against the stops.

Execution Instructions

Exhale to press the carriage out with a long spine, then rotate one arm and the trunk to open the chest while the hips stay square; return through center and repeat to the other side.

Teaching Cues

Breath

"Exhale to press out, exhale again as you rotate to open the chest."

Alignment

"Keep the hips square as the trunk rotates from the ribs."

Control

"Press out and rotate with the same tempo — no rocking the pelvis."

Form

"Reach the rotating arm long to lengthen the line through the side body."

Modifications & Progressions

Hands Anchored Twist (Regression)

Keep both hands on the footbar and rotate only the chest and head to shorten the lever.

Extended Arm Twist (Progression)

Reach the rotating arm long past the footbar to lengthen the lever and deepen rotation.
