How the footbar angle changes the mechanics of an exercise — leverage, knee flexion, and which muscles take the load — and how to set it for footwork, bridging, and feet-in-straps work.

Introduction

The footbar is not just a place to put the feet — its height sets the angle of the working line, and that angle decides how much knee flexion the client starts with, how long the leg lever is, and therefore which muscles do the work. Move the bar and the same exercise becomes a different exercise.

This is why "high equals harder" is the wrong mental model. The bar height should follow the intent of the movement, not its difficulty. Getting this wrong is one of the most common reasons an exercise feels "off" while the spring setting is perfectly fine.

What Height Actually Changes

  • Bar high — the knees start more deeply flexed, so the leg lever is short and the carriage range is small. The load biases toward the quadriceps, and the position is the most supportive and easiest to keep aligned.
  • Bar medium — a middle ground: a longer leg lever than the high setting with more carriage range, still an angle most clients can organize their pelvis around. This is the default working height for a great deal of the repertoire.
  • Bar low — the legs start closer to straight, so the lever is long and the range is large. The load shifts posteriorly into the hamstrings and glutes, and the exercise becomes considerably more demanding to control.
  • Bar down — the bar is folded out of the way because the body or the hands need the space, not because of resistance at all.

So the useful rule is a relationship, not a ranking: the more the legs are the lever and the glutes and hamstrings are the target, the lower the bar goes; the more the knees are bent and the quads and alignment are the focus, the higher it goes.

A note on toe grip: whenever the feet are on the bar, the whole foot presses — heel, ball, and toes together. Curling or gripping the toes shifts the work away from the leg, compresses the front of the ankle, and is a sign the bar may be set too high for the client to reach comfortably.

Footwork

Medium is the working height for footwork in this library, not high. That is a deliberate distinction: the parallel positions are the loaded presses, so they use the medium bar — a long enough leg lever to feel the work, a short enough one to keep the pelvis quiet. The high bar is reserved for the small-range ankle and calf work, where the bar is essentially a lifted footrest and depth of knee flexion is not the variable being trained.

  • Footwork: Parallel V-Pliemedium bar, headrest up. The alignment baseline and the natural session opener, and the clearest expression of the medium working height.
  • Footwork: Wide Stancemedium bar. Same press with a wider base, adding adductor and lateral pelvic stability demand. The wider stance already shortens the working line, so the bar does not need to go higher to support it.
  • Footwork: Single Legmedium bar. Each leg works alone, so the pelvis is the limiting factor; the medium bar keeps lever and range inside what one hip can stabilize.
  • Footwork: Parallel Press Away, Footwork: Calf Raises, Footwork: Running, and Footwork: Ankle Extension Serieshigh bar. These are the ankle-dominant members of the family: small-range presses, heel lifts, and ankle articulation where the high setting keeps the feet reachable with the heels up and limits how much the legs can act as a lever.

Why drop the bar for footwork?

If the goal is to feel the back of the legs rather than the front, the bar comes down — not up. A lower bar lengthens the leg lever and hands more of the work to the hamstrings and glutes, and many teachers prefer the low setting for footwork and for seated press work for exactly that reason. Both are defensible choices; they simply train different intents. Choose based on what you want the client to feel, and change one variable at a time so the cause of the difference stays obvious.

Bridging: the Most Commonly Inverted Setting

Bridging is where footbar convention is most often taught backwards. The instinct is to raise the bar to make the bridge easier or more supported. Mechanically that does the opposite of what bridging is for: a higher bar shortens the leg lever, keeps the knees deeply bent, and shifts work into the quadriceps — while also leaving the hips less room to travel. Because a bridge is a glute and hamstring exercise, it wants the longest lever the client can control, which means a lower bar, not a higher one.

The progression therefore runs downward as the client gets stronger — not upward.

  • Pelvic Curlmedium bar. Knees flexed around 90 degrees with the feet flat on the bar, hip-width apart. This is the entry point: enough knee bend to keep the pelvis organized, enough lever to feel the posterior chain.
  • Glute Bridge Seriesmedium bar, headrest up. Pelvic tilt, bridge, and pulses at the top, using the same foot position as the Pelvic Curl.
  • Single Leg Bridgelow bar. Once one foot leaves the bar, the pelvis has to hold a level line against a single hip; the low bar lengthens the lever and loads the supporting glute and hamstring, which is the point of the exercise.

Regression and progression by bar height: if the low setting produces hip hiking, rib flaring, hamstring cramping, or an over-arched low back, raise the bar to medium or high and reduce the range — then work back down as control improves. For low-back sensitivity, a neutral flat bridge at a higher bar is a legitimate regression, since it removes the articulation without removing the work.

Feet in Straps: Clearance, Not Resistance

When the legs are in the straps, the footbar stops being a lever entirely. It is only a piece of apparatus the legs may pass near or over, so its height is a clearance decision rather than a load decision.

  • Feet in Straps: Lower & Liftmedium bar. The bar has to be out of the path of the long legs as they lower and lift, without inviting the client to rest a foot on it.
  • The rest of the Feet in Straps family — Frog, Leg Circles, Bicycles, Scissors, Walking, Side Splits, and the leg press variations — is set medium for the same reason.

Here the bar is not asked to change the difficulty of anything. If the legs are catching the bar, fold it a setting lower and re-check that the pelvis is still anchored.

Lift and Lower: Which One Do You Mean?

"Lift and lower" describes two different things in this repertoire, and they want different bar heights — so it is worth being specific with a client or in your notes.

  1. Feet in Straps: Lower & Lift — the legs are the lever and the bar is only clearance. Set it medium and forget it.
  2. Single Leg Bridge and its lift-and-lower pulses — the pelvis is lifting and lowering, so the bar is the fulcrum. Low, for the posterior-chain reason above.

Quick Reference

  • Footwork, parallel positions — medium bar. The loaded presses, where a long lever would cost pelvic stability.
  • Footwork, ankle and calf work — high bar. Small-range ankle work that needs the feet reachable with the heels lifted.
  • Footwork, single leg — medium bar. The pelvis, not the leg, is the limiting factor.
  • Pelvic Curl and Glute Bridge Series — medium bar, then progress the client downward.
  • Single Leg Bridge and lifts/lowers of the pelvis — low bar. Longest lever, most posterior-chain load.
  • Feet in Straps, including Lower & Lift — medium bar. Clearance only; the bar is not the resistance.
  • Standing work on the bar — low bar. The heels need the bar close to the carriage to squat and hinge.
  • Hands on the bar (Elephant, Knee Stretches, Long Stretch, Down Stretch, Up Stretch) — bar down. Required for the hands and knees, not a resistance choice. Plenty of strap, box, and prone work folds the bar down for the same reason of clearance.

Teaching Notes

  • Change one variable at a time. If you raise the bar and add a spring together, neither of you can tell which one fixed the exercise.
  • When an exercise feels wrong, check the bar before you change the springs. A bar that is set too high reads as "quads and knees"; a bar set too low reads as "cannot keep the feet planted."
  • Set the bar for the client, not the exercise. Hip and hamstring length decide how low a client can work with control — the same setting is a different exercise for a tall, flexible client and a shorter, stiffer one.
  • If a client cannot reach the bar without pointing the toes, the bar is too high or the client needs to be closer to the shoulder rests; do not let the feet reach for it.
  • A folded mat over the bar is a legitimate fine adjustment between settings — useful when medium is too high and low is too low.
  • The stored setting is the reference; the prose in the per-series teaching notes was written separately and does not always match it. Where the two disagree, the exercise's own apparatus setting is what the library lists, and this guide follows it.
