Teaching notes for Elephant: hip-hinge control, Flat Back vs Round Back versions, and hamstring-loaded press work.

Overview

Elephant is the reformer's standing hamstring stretch with a twist: standing on the carriage with the heels against the shoulder rests and the hands on the footbar, the client presses the carriage out and draws it back in without changing the shape of the spine. It is one of the best teachers of hip-hinge control and one of the few exercises that loads the hamstrings through a long, straight spine.

Setup

  • A medium-strong setting (in our reference ladder: 1 Red or 1 Green); footbar up.
  • Stand facing the footbar with the heels down against the shoulder rests and the hands on the bar, shoulder-width apart.
  • The spine is long and neutral (Flat Back) or in a gentle C-curve (Round Back), depending on the version.

Key Teaching Cues

  • Hinge from the hips β€” the spine keeps its shape as the carriage moves.
  • Keep the heels down and the legs long; the work belongs in the hamstrings.
  • Exhale to press the carriage out by extending through the hips, inhale to draw it back in by scooping the abdominals.
  • Keep the shoulders stacked over the hands and the neck long.

Common Faults

  • Rounding the spine as the carriage travels β€” the hinge becomes a fold.
  • Lifting the heels to gain range.
  • Bending the knees and losing the hamstring stretch.
  • Collapsing through the shoulders or dropping the head.
  • Piking at the hips instead of pressing the carriage with the legs.

Variations

  • Flat Back Elephant: the spine stays long and neutral β€” the safer version for low-back sensitivity and the default for most clients (see the Low Back Pain Protocol).
  • Round Back Elephant: the spine holds a gentle C-curve β€” for clients cleared for loaded flexion only.
  • Regression: shorten the press-out range or use a lighter spring.
  • Progression: slow the tempo and add a pause at the full extension.

Programming Notes

Elephant belongs in the lower-body or hamstring block, after footwork and before bridging work. It doubles as a standing stretch, so it also works well at the end of a leg-heavy session. Keep the reps moderate β€” quality of hinge beats quantity of press.
