Cross-Body Shoulder Stretch

Modern Repertoire Beginner Stretching & MobilityUpper Body & Arms

A standing shoulder-girdle stretch at the parked reformer: the arm draws straight across the chest and the other hand holds it in place, lengthening the back of the shoulder and the upper arm.

⚠️ Clinical Contraindications

  • Shoulder Impingement: Cross-body adduction can pinch the front of the shoulder; keep the range pain-free and skip it with active shoulder pain.
  • Neck & Cervical Strain: Keep the neck long and the head still — do not pull the head toward the shoulder to gain range.

Setup Instructions

Stand on the floor inside the reformer frame facing the footbar, one to two steps back from the headrest, with the feet hip-width apart and parallel and the machine parked. Bring one arm straight across the chest at shoulder height and hook the other arm under it, just above the elbow.

Execution Instructions

  1. Stand tall with the ribs connected and the shoulder blades drawn down the back.
  2. Draw the stretching arm across the chest toward the opposite shoulder, holding it just above the elbow with the other hand, and keep the stretching shoulder pressed down and back rather than letting it shrug toward the ear.
  3. Exhale to ease the arm closer, inhale to soften, and hold for two to three breaths without bouncing at the end of the range.
  4. Release slowly and change sides.

Teaching Cues

Form

"Draw the arm across at shoulder height and keep it straight — do not let it ride up toward the chin."

Alignment

"Press the stretching shoulder down and back; a shrug toward the ear is the substitution to watch for."

Breath

"Exhale to ease the arm closer to the chest, inhale to soften the stretch."

Control

"Hold the position still — no pulling or bouncing at the end of the range."

Modifications & Progressions

Bent-Elbow Cross-Body (Regression)

Keep the elbow softly bent and bring the arm across at chest height, holding the upper arm rather than the elbow, to reduce the stretch.

Two-Breath Hold (Progression)

Hold the stretch for two full breaths and gently draw the arm a little closer on each exhale.

Below Shoulder Height (Injury Modification)

For shoulder impingement or a painful arc, keep the arm below shoulder height, shorten the cross-body range and stop at the first pinch.
