Standing Ankle Rock Stretch

Both Repertoire Beginner Stretching & Mobility

Supported standing ankle and calf mobility at the head of the reformer: with the hands on the shoulder rests, the weight rocks from the heels to the balls of the feet, mobilising the ankles and easing the legs.

⚠️ Clinical Contraindications

  • Ankle / Achilles Sensitivity: Loaded heel raises load the achilles; keep the range small and the movement pain-free.
  • Knee Issues: Keep the knees soft and the rock small so the knees are never pushed into extension.

Setup Instructions

Stand on the floor inside the reformer frame facing the footbar, one to two steps back from the headrest, with both hands resting on the shoulder rests. Feet hip-width apart and parallel, spine long.

Execution Instructions

  1. Keep the hands on the shoulder rests and the spine tall.
  2. Rock the weight back into the heels, letting the toes lift, then travel forward over the balls of the feet, letting the heels lift, and keep rolling smoothly from one end of the foot to the other.
  3. Feel the stretch move through the calves and the front of the ankles, keep the knees soft, and do not bounce at either end of the range.

Teaching Cues

Alignment

"Keep the spine long and the hands light on the shoulder rests."

Form

"Roll through the whole foot, heel to ball, letting the toes and the heels lift in turn."

Control

"No bouncing at either end — the rock stays slow and continuous."

Breath

"Keep breathing evenly as you rock; the movement follows the breath."

Modifications & Progressions

Smaller Rock (Regression)

Rock through a smaller range and keep more weight in the hands until the ankles feel warm.

Breath at Each End (Progression)

Hold the weight in the heels for one breath, then over the balls of the feet for one breath, to deepen the stretch at each end.

Heel Raises Only (Injury Modification)

For ankle or achilles sensitivity, keep the heels barely lifted and skip the end of the range.
