⚠️ Clinical Contraindications

  • Ankle / Achilles Sensitivity: Dropping the ankles under the footbar at full extension is an end-range calf and Achilles stretch; reduce the range, keep the heels higher, or stay with the first two exercises.
  • Knee Issues: Keep the knees soft rather than locked at full extension, and shorten the range if the knee complains.

  1. Press the carriage to full extension.
  2. Keeping the legs straight, drop the ankles under the footbar until you feel the calf stretch, hold for a second, then press the ankles away to return to full extension.
  3. Inhale to bend the knees and return the carriage to the stoppers.
  4. Work 4-6 slow reps.

Teaching Cues

Breath

"Inhale to prepare, exhale to press, and let the breath ride the ankle stretch."

Control

"Drop the ankles under the footbar only as far as the calf releases; never bounce."

Form

"The legs stay straight — the stretch comes from the ankle, not from the knee."

Modifications & Progressions

Heels on the Footbar (Regression)

Take the same full-extension hold with the heels on the bar to reduce the end-range ankle stretch.

Ankle-Sparing Hold (Injury Modification)

Hold at full extension without dropping the ankles, or reduce the drop to a comfortable range.
