⚠️ Clinical Contraindications

  • Osteoporosis / Osteopenia: Avoid loaded side flexion; substitute with a small neutral side shift.
  • Low Back Pain: Keep the bend through the ribcage and stop if side flexion aggravates symptoms.

Setup Instructions

Sit tall on the short box (side-on) with the feet secured under the strap, one hand behind the head or reaching overhead, the other resting on the hip.

Execution Instructions

Inhale to lengthen tall, exhale to bend the spine laterally over the hip, reaching the top arm overhead; inhale to return through center with control, then repeat to the other side.

Teaching Cues

Breath

"Inhale to lengthen, exhale to bend over the hip."

Form

"Bend from the ribcage, not the waist — keep the hips level and square."

Alignment

"Reach the top arm long over the ear to keep the spine in one long line."

Control

"Return through center with the same speed you bent — no collapsing."

Modifications & Progressions

Hand on Hip (Regression)

Rest the top hand on the hip instead of reaching overhead to shorten the lever.

Both Arms Overhead (Progression)

Reach both arms overhead and clasp the hands to lengthen the lever.
