Primary Teaching Variables

Every Pilates exercise can be described by a handful of variables that determine its difficulty and character. Mastering these variables lets a single exercise serve a wide range of clients:

  • Lever Length: The distance between the joint axis and the workload, which alters torque and core demand.
  • Resistance and Spring Tension: Equipment springs or external weight, adjusted to support alignment or increase muscular load.
  • Base of Support: Body positioning that increases or decreases balance and stability challenges.
  • Tempo and Rhythm: Speed of execution, which targets different muscular capabilities and control.

How to Progress and Regress Movements

A single exercise can serve a beginner or an elite athlete depending on how its variables are manipulated. Rather than teaching entirely different exercises, effective instructors tweak variables incrementally — one change at a time — so the client always works within reach of success.

Leverage and Torque

Extending limbs creates a longer lever, increasing the load on the stabilizing musculature. In the Hundreds, for example, keeping the legs bent at tabletop shortens the lever to protect the lower back, while fully extending the legs lengthens the lever arm and significantly elevates abdominal demand.

The Dual Role of Spring Resistance

Unlike traditional weight training, spring tension on Pilates apparatus can either assist or challenge a movement. Heavier springs offer more feedback and assistance during footwork or roll-backs — the spring helps return the carriage — but add extreme muscular resistance during pulling or upper-body series. Choose springs with the exercise's intent in mind, not just "more is harder."

The Variable Impact Matrix

Use this guide to determine how to adjust movement parameters based on your client's needs:

  • Lever Length: To regress, shorten levers (bent knees, arms close to the body). To progress, lengthen levers (straight legs, overhead reach).
  • Base of Support: To regress, widen the feet or hands and lower the center of gravity. To progress, narrow the stance, or work single-leg, kneeling, or standing.
  • Range of Motion: To regress, limit the movement to a small, controlled arc. To progress, work into full anatomical range or end-range holds.
  • Tempo: To regress, use a moderate, deliberate pace with static pauses. To progress, use explosive concentric work or slow, eccentric loading.

Smart Class Adaptations

When managing mixed-ability group classes or individual physical restrictions, always establish a solid baseline movement first, then layer in variable progressions one at a time.

If a client breaks form, loses spinal alignment, or exhibits joint compensation, immediately scale back one variable — such as bending the knees or reducing range of motion — to re-establish movement integrity. The goal is always the same: a successful repetition, not an impressive-looking failure.
